Practitioner modules

Welcome to the practitioner training modules, designed to help operational teams understand and respond to nature-related challenges.

The 12 modules guide learners through:

• The ‘Why’ (Modules 1-4) – foundational concepts of business and nature, financial implications and the need to act.
• The ‘What’ (Modules 5-10) – current industry practice and how organisations are responding.
• The ‘How’ (Modules 11-12) – practical exercises for learners to explore how their organisations can implement learnings.

Who are these materials for?

These materials support trainers delivering training to operational professionals who need to understand nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. They provide a foundation to help organisations get started with understanding, assessing and responding to nature-related issues.

Notes for trainers

• Materials must be adapted to different audiences, regions and sectors in line with the Responsible Use Guidelines. Please refer to the trainer handbook for details on how to adapt the modules.
• Modules are designed to be delivered in 60-90 minute sessions, with the exception of module 6.Module 6: The LEAP approach is designed to be delivered over eight hours as a full-day workshop or over a number of sessions.
• Modules 5-12 benefit from participants having a solid understanding of the concepts underpinning nature and business outlined in the LEAP approach.

Practitioner module 1: The world we live in and the nature-business nexus

The opening module provides a big-picture perspective and asks learners to reflect on  the state of nature in the context of global trends. Through facts and figures, it highlights nature loss, evolving stakeholder expectations and the urgent need to change business-as-usual practices.

  • By the end of the module, learners will be able to: 
  • Recognise key nature-related trends and their systemic interconnections with other environmental, economic and social issues. 
  • Understand the implications of these trends for corporates and financial institutions.

Practitioner module 2: Nature-related issues – understanding the commercial implications of nature

This module explores the commercial urgency of addressing nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. It explores how nature-related issues have material financial implications for corporates and financial institutions and how they could materialise across value chains/sectors.

Practitioner module 3: The TNFD recommendations

Module 3 introduces the TNFD recommendations, providing an overview of the 14 recommended disclosures, assessment approach and measurement architecture. It also highlights alignment to other sustainability-related reporting frameworks.

  • Explain what the TNFD recommendations and accompanying guidance cover. 
  • Describe how they can be used by their organisation to identify, assess, disclose and manage nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities.

Practitioner module 4: Understanding key TNFD terms

This module provides a foundational overview of key nature-related terms and concepts. Trainers are encouraged to enhance engagement by incorporating practical examples and real-world applications relevant to the learners’ own organisation or sector.

  • Explain key sustainability and nature-related terms. 
  • Understand how to use these in the context of their organisation.

Practitioner module 5: Interoperability of key frameworks

Module 5 provides an overview of how the TNFD recommended disclosures ensure alignment with global policy initiatives and consistency and interoperability with evolving reporting standards and frameworks. This module is aimed at practitioners who have a background in reporting within corporates and financial institutions.

    Practitioner module 6: The LEAP Approach

    This module provides a detailed overview of the LEAP approach, enabling practitioners to identify and assess nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities within their organisations/portfolios. Learners will apply the four phases of the LEAP approach by engaging in a hypothetical case study and structured exercises.

    • Apply the LEAP approach to identify nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities within their organisations/portfolios.

    Practitioner module 7: The TNFD measurement architecture and metrics

    Module 7 shows practitioners how to use the TNFD measurement architecture and metrics to assess and manage nature-related issues.

    Practitioner module 8: Nature-related data and tools

    This module highlights the tools and data practitioners can use to support assessment, disclosure and management of nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities.

    Practitioner module 10: Engagement

    M10 Practitioners Cover

    Module 10 equips practitioners with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage with Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and affected stakeholders that interface with an organisation’s nature-related issues. Recognising that standard business practices often overlook the rights and perspectives of these groups, the module advocates for the integration of their views in organisational strategies, policies, processes and decision making.

    By the end of the module, learners will be able to: 

    • Understand how effective processes for engaging with Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and affected stakeholders can help to inform identification, assessment, management and disclosure of nature-related issues by their organisation.

    Practitioner module 11: Embedding the TNFD recommendations in your organisation

    This module explores how learners and their organisation(s) can take things forward and implement the learnings in practice. A practical exercise is included to support interactive discussion and active exploration of topics covered in earlier modules.

    • Examine their organisation’s nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. 
    • Explore what they mean in their role as a practitioner within their organisation.

    Practitioner module 12: How to take things forward in your specific role

    M12 Practitioners Cover

    Module 12 helps practitioners reflect on how they can best support their team, division or organisation to address nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. The module is centred around a practical exercise to create a personal action plan.

    Learning outcomes

    By the end of the module, learners will be able to: 

    • Create a personal action plan to support their organisation in improving business performance by minimising nature-negative and maximising nature-positive outcomes.
