Home » Resource Database Educational video Investing with Nature: Deep dive on nature-based solutions in farmlands Authoring Organisation UNEP FI Publish Date July 2023 About this Educational videoIncreases in population, wealth and urbanization around the world has resulted in an increase in food demand. Nowadays, more than half of the earth’s habitable lands are used for agricultural production and about 70% of the planet’s accessible freshwater withdrawals are used for agricultural activities. This makes farmers and other food producers some of the most important stewards of the world’s lands and water resources. However, negative impacts such as increased uncertainty in weather patterns, water insecurity and soil degradation resulting from climate change are becoming increasingly difficult for farmers and producers to navigate while ensuring food security for the world’s population. Nature-based solutions in farmlands provide an effective and cost-efficient approach to delivering nutrition for people worldwide while restoring nature and climate, contributing to the transition to a regenerative and nature-positive food system. The fourth deep dive session of our new “Investing in Nature: Exploring Investment Opportunities Across Ecosystems” webinar series – funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – will introduce nature-based solutions in farmlands by explaining the science behind, challenges for implementation, motivation for financial institutions to invest, and a few practical examples. The panel discussion will focus on the experiences, as well as various angles and perspectives of public and private actors investing in farmland-related NbS.
