About this LEAP Use Case

Financial institutions, such as Allianz, are indirectly linked to actual and potential impacts via its business activities. Biodiversity loss poses a risk for businesses and their supply chains, thereby impacting financial risks for investors.

To better understand nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities across its business activities, Allianz conducted an assessment using the LEAP approach on samples across three asset classes within its proprietary investment portfolio: single location assets, multi-location assets (corporates) and sovereigns.

Key outcomes

  • Understanding the dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities of Allianz's portfolio also requires evaluating how the entities they invest in assess and manage their nature-related issues. This includes examining their biodiversity policies, actions, and targets, as well as mitigation measures.
  • Considering the complex and multi-faceted nature of biodiversity issues, nuanced data aggregation approaches should be developed before integration into existing strategies and decision-making processes.
  • As next steps, Allianz will explore the development of a systematic biodiversity approach, focusing on a single sector and assessing how to effectively aggregate available data into meaningful insights.
